San Miniato al Monte – Mosaic in the Apse

Church of San Miniato al Monte

April 2022

Completed

The Church of San Miniato al Monte overlooking Florence celebrated its 1000 anniversary in 2018 and continues to be a unique spiritual and cultural site for the city.

Friends of Florence restored the High Altar in honor of the 1000 anniversary in 2018 with the support of major donors. In 2021, we completed the restoration of the entire Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal with a bequest by Professor Jon Cherubini.

In 2022, Friends of Florence began a complex project to restore the artworks in the apse of San Miniato with the iconic mosaics dating to 1297. Click here for a brief history in Italian with English translation.

The mosaics are in urgent need of conservation and the project will also comprehend the marble architectural elements of the apse and pulpit. This important project is made possible through a major gift by Stacy Simon and her daughters in memory of their beloved Bruce Simon, Board member of Friends of Florence.
